Hello kinksters – The San Francisco community got hit yesterday by news that our beloved local community space Stopgap is under attack, and a lot of community energy is being taken up by that. It’s certain that more information will be coming out – especially how to help – but if you are already a Stopgap fan and want to help, they are running some emergency fundraising through ​Venmo​, and you can find out more about the situation on ​Fetlife​. (If you want to be cheeky about it, put “Wicked Grounds sent me” in your payment memo.) We recommend this space frequently to local folks in our classes, and I feel strongly committed to having this space as the San Francisco community clubhouse, just as we were privileged to be for many years. As fundraising and action becomes more solidified, we’ll keep you posted. One quick administrative note: We did some major cleanup to our mailing list last week. Hello kinksters – I personally moderated our class on Pedi Pain last night, and learned a lot of great new material. I laughed, I winced, and you bet I took notes for my own creatively sadistic scenes! Hello kinksters – We talk about Pride Month, but I’m really getting into it this year! Last weekend, I attended Pride celebrations in my very rural northern California town. There were several bands, lots of helpful support and information, and my town’s first ever – totally packed!!! – drag celebration in our downtown movie theater. It was a very long day (and night), and I left feeling very grateful for it. I love the huge celebrations we have in San Francisco, but there is something very tender and precious about seeing LGBTQIA+ folks of all ages making a party together in a zero-stoplight town. Hello kinksters – As I write this, I’m sitting in my favorite “office away from home,” a little coffee zone in a tourist spot on the Sonoma coast about a half-hour from my home. While it’s not that far from me, it offers a completely different vantage point: a vast expanse of tranquil ocean stretching far past the horizon. I sit here, sip on tropical flavored tea, and let my world open up a bit. Finding small ways to add novelty to everyday experience is good for us! It allows us to slow down, rewire the ways we think, and engage with the world in more creative ways. This is particularly important for me right now, as I develop our summer and fall intensives for Wicked Grounds (and finish collaborating with some kick-ass instructors in our yearly Kink Class Incubator). Setting aside time to go deeper has immediate benefits; we can slow down and unfurl a bit. But it has significant long-term benefits. While kink is no substitute for therapy, there is emerging evidence that, when approached mindfully, peak experiences like kink can have profound emotional and cognitive benefits. Pretty cool for going out to a Saturday night party! At Wicked Grounds, we’re all about going deeper. That means providing easy entry points into kink for complete beginners, places to regularly refine skills and comfort for regular players, and even spaces to go really deep into the work of self-exploration and advanced play through our intensives and multi-week programs.
