Hello kinksters – As I write this, I’m sitting in my favorite “office away from home,” a little coffee zone in a tourist spot on the Sonoma coast about a half-hour from my home. While it’s not that far from me, it offers a completely different vantage point: a vast expanse of tranquil ocean stretching far past the horizon. I sit here, sip on tropical flavored tea, and let my world open up a bit. Finding small ways to add novelty to everyday experience is good for us! It allows us to slow down, rewire the ways we think, and engage with the world in more creative ways. This is particularly important for me right now, as I develop our summer and fall intensives for Wicked Grounds (and finish collaborating with some kick-ass instructors in our yearly Kink Class Incubator). Setting aside time to go deeper has immediate benefits; we can slow down and unfurl a bit. But it has significant long-term benefits. While kink is no substitute for therapy, there is emerging evidence that, when approached mindfully, peak experiences like kink can have profound emotional and cognitive benefits. Pretty cool for going out to a Saturday night party! At Wicked Grounds, we’re all about going deeper. That means providing easy entry points into kink for complete beginners, places to regularly refine skills and comfort for regular players, and even spaces to go really deep into the work of self-exploration and advanced play through our intensives and multi-week programs. Hello kinksters – One of the earliest lessons I learned is that world confidence and sexual confidence are inseparable. But at first I got it all backwards. I had this idea that to be a great dominant or sexually-awakened person, I’d first have to gain lots of confidence in the world. And of course, that doesn’t hurt. But I learned something unexpected and life-changing as I dove into the world of polyamory and kink. I discovered that finding the confidence to unearth and ask for my own desires, to play without shame and fear, to build community on my own terms – all of those helped me throughout the rest of my life. As I stepped into my sexual self-awareness, I also learned to speak up for myself in the rest of my life. As I gained the confidence to play (and later teach) in public, I also gained the confidence to take my relationships, creativity, and former career to new levels. Eventually, I gained the bravery to take custody of a beloved community space and forge a new direction for it. I believe strongly that what we learn in the world of kink is not separate from the rest of our lives. What we learn here carries over into transforming all the rest of our lives. I’m not sure what your journey is right now, and I’m not sure what all your challenges are. I know that the world at large is throwing challenges at all of us. What I suspect is this: often, in hard times like these, it’s tempting to assume that our relationships, celebrations, and sexuality are a side-project, something we’ll get back to when the world isn’t on fire. And what I know from my own experience and from watching thousands of others over the years: we are best able to find resilience when we continue to tend our own life-force. That means keeping our sexuality, our vitality, our relationships, and our communities strong. Wicked Grounds is committed to sexual health and kink adventurers for the long term. Hello kinksters – You might have noticed that things are mildly . . . weird in the world right now. Our little kink bubble is not immune from the weirdness. One thing on our minds this week is ​Mike Lee’s recently introduced anti-obscenity bill​. While there have been many, many attempts to reduce access to sexual content online over the years, they’ve been hit-and-miss in their success rates. That said, even legislation short of a full ban can cause disruptions to the entire rage of sexual content online – including education & therapy. (The enacting of ​SESTA/FOSTA​ caused major disruptions to several adult content creators, including Wicked Grounds’ early membership programs.) We continue to keep an eye on all this, and we’re grateful for the work of organization like the SF Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District and the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom. Over the past two weeks, I’ve been thrilled to see many examples of kinksters creating strategies for resilience, resistance, and maybe even thriving in these times. Several groups came together to host a Unity party in San Francisco, and there are several new outings, adventures, and retreats planned for the area. Later this month, San Francisco’s ​Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District​ has planned a workshop for ​Advocacy, Action, and Safety​ and even my teeny, tiny coastal town is abuzz with plans for this year’s Pride celebrations. I’m also delighted at the creativity and innovation bubbling up in just the first week of this year’s Kink Class Incubator, and can’t wait to see what this crop of instructors brings to the world.
