Hello kinksters – There is a lot going on this month with Wicked Grounds, but I want to start out this week by talking about another organization that has impacted me greatly. I’ve mentioned in some of my classes that when I moved to San Francisco, I was incredibly intimidated by the local scene, despite having been pretty active in my home communities in Texas. The first organization I got involved with in San Francisco was ​Mission Control​. When I volunteered to work for my first event there (Velvet!), I quickly made new friends and found a warm, welcoming community. I jumped both feet in, quickly finding myself at their old location several time for a big renovation project. When Mission Control lost that space on Mission Street, I was gutted. But those savvy folks found a new home in Oakland, and now they want to make it their forever home by buying the space. This is a huge deal not just for Mission Control but all of kinky and sex-positive San Francisco. If I have personally made a difference in your life, it’s probably because Mission Control helped me get into the local community. If you’d like to pay it forward to them, you can help them with critical fundraising to buy their forever home ​here​. First, a quick introduction to the District In 2018, after many years of effort (that many Wicked Grounds customers, staff, and ownership were part of), San Francisco established the worlds first ​Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District​. Seven years later, the District has started to make a big difference not only in its SOMA area of San Francisco but well beyond, through its support of local kink, queer, and Leather businesses — but by extension helping kinksters well beyond the Bay Area. I consider the existence of the District to have had a huge impact on Wicked Grounds’ ability to survive and thrive over the past several years. And: as someone who had a close a beloved brick-and-mortar space in the District’s footprint, I feel very strongly about their mission in helping remaining brick-and-mortar businesses survive. What is LeatherWalk? LeatherWalk has existed in a few forms over the years. These days, it is being managed by the Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District. For those who walk in person, it is a very fun afternoon of being proud and visible, and getting a great tour of some of the venues and businesses that make the District so fun.
