How not to learn about kink, from my own experience!

When I was a baby submissive back in the early 2000s, I was eager to learn. I’d read a few books about BDSM over the previous decade, and as I entered my first serious D/s dynamic, I was starving for more.

Unfortunately, I did something pretty stupid. Because I was in an ongoing dynamic (with, it turned out, an extremely inexperienced dominant), I let my dominant guide not just our relationship but my education. I read the books she wanted me to read, and she forbade me from reading others. I avoided local classes because of her anxieties.

I was young, I didn’t know better, and I truly believed that her authority in our dynamic extended to my whole relationship with BDSM and kink.

That was a profound mistake. One of the first things I did after leaving that relationship was demolish the funhouse-mirror image of kink I’d built and start over.

Ever since, one of my core approaches has been to listen to as many voices as I can. Voices I agree with, voices that challenge me, voices I respectfully disagree with, and maybe even a few I judge a bit in my head. I’ve very intentionally used my own experiences and journey in kink as a sounding board to figure out what’s right for me — and what might be right for others but not for me.
