Hope for Monday: a fun fact about dopamine!

February 25, 2025 By Miriam Green

Mondays. Am I right?

Maybe you’re having drop today. Or maybe it’s just the blahs of facing a desk after a relaxing and fun weekend.

Mondays make a mess of us.

But I have some good news from the realm of happiness research.

Your brain produces the neurotransmitter dopamine. It’s a “reward center” for many body functions, including motivation, mood, and attention.

What’s the good news about dopamine? When we do something pleasurable, our brain releases it. But it also releases when you plan something pleasurable. This is why planning a vacation can be almost as pleasurable as going on one.

So if you’re feeling meh today, plan something fun and commit to it.

A few ideas:

By taking time to do something nice for yourself today, or better yet, plan something nice in the future, you give your brain just a little dopamine. That not only sets off a pleasure reaction for now, but it also puts a bit of wind in your sails by improving your mood, attention, and motivation. Give it a try!

And may we all get through this Monday together.

Cheers
Mir
